Our Mission
The mission of The Children's Place Association is to improve the present and secure the future for children, youth and families confronted by HIV/AIDS or other life-changing health conditions.
Who We Serve
We serve the vulnerable children and their families in Chicagoland that are infected with or affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In addition, our Residential Center cares for children affected by other life-changing health conditions including among others cerebral palsy, pediatric cancer and severe juvenile diabetes.
Children's Place International provides for children and families that are affected by HIV/AIDS in Haiti and Guyana.
Why We Serve
Currently more than 2 million children live with HIV. In the last year 900 children died each day due to the effects of the disease. In addition, there are many more children that are affected, meaning one or both of their parents are HIV positive. There is no Chicago HIV/AIDS crisis. There is no Illinois HIV/AIDS crisis. There is no Haiti HIV/AIDS crisis. There is only one global crisis and The Children's Place Association exists to be a beacon of hope for those affected by the epidemic.

In Haiti, we have one facility in Gonaives. It is a transit house that provides a place for individuals living with HIV from rural areas to pass the night going or coming to clinic in Gonaives. It has a nurse and social worker on staff. It is currently not open. It will be open within one month.
The bulk of our programming in Haiti is home visitation. We have 20 staff – para social workers – who support approximately 100 families (440 children) affected by HIV/AIDS in Gonaives, Limonade, Cap Haitien, and L’Estere. In the area of healthcare, we accompany individuals living with HIV to clinic, pay for medications not covered by the clinic, and provide each family with monthly food support. Concerning the cholera epidemic, we have been providing weekly R/O water distributions, soap, oral rehydration salts, education, and accompaniment to clinic of sick individuals. We have had 17 individuals with symptoms consistent with cholera and 2 adult deaths. All but one of these individuals has been in Gonaives or L’Estere.
We also provide other support (school fees/books/uniforms, youth entrepreneurship training, and housing).

Children's Place International
There are more than 2.5 million children living with HIV/AIDS around the world and 90 percent of them are in developing countries. In recognition of the growing international need, Children’s Place International was launched in 2007.
The goal of the program is to ensure that children affected by HIV/AIDS have the opportunity to live their lives in fullness and dignity. To achieve this goal, we help families meet their children's physical, psychological, and cognitive developmental needs. This approach, similar to our Chicago-based programs, is based on the philosophy that child development occurs optimally in the presence of loving and nurturing adults.
Children's Place International launched programming in Haiti in January 2008 and we are currently working with the government of Guyana to establish programs.
How the Program Works
Children's Place International works with medical centers and community organizations in each country to identify families affected by HIV/AIDS who are unable to meet the developmental needs of their children. Program staff then reaches out to these families to build relationships in order to understand their needs and create a plan to address them. Needs may be met by the family itself, the community or external resources provided by Children's Place International and donors from the United States.
