MAP International continues to monitor the situation in Pakistan and is coordinating with in-country health institutions and programs for the delivery and dispensing of medicines and medical services. Current support is directed through partners in D.I. Khan District, however additional areas will be included following the receipt of further field reports.
MAP International is continuing to provide medicines and medical supplies to help the people of Haiti as they begin what is sure to be a long recovery, following the massive earthquake that struck the island nation on January 12. Within 10 days of the quake MAP had medicines and medical supplies valued at $10 million dollars committed to the relief effort in Haiti. Much of this desperately needed cargo has already been received by medical partners in the country and more is currently in route to Port-au-Prince by air or sea.
On Monday Feb. 1, John Garvin, MAP’s Director of Relief returned to the country for a second time to assess the need of our partners on the ground. On his first trip John delivered the first 14 boxes of medicines, wound care supplies, water filters and communications gear to Christian Aid Ministries, one of our long-term partners. At that time, he also successfully contacted some of MAP’s other major long-term partners, assessing their needs and mobilization efforts.
MAP has a 40+ year history of supplying medical shipments to clinics and hospitals throughout Haiti. Because we make regular shipments to clinics and hospitals in Haiti almost $3 million dollars worth of regular support shipments to the country could quickly be diverted to the hardest hit areas. MAP was in a unique position get critically needed supplies out of its distribution center in Brunswick, GA and into the hands of health professionals already working in the country. These initial shipments were among the first to reach caregivers in the Port-au-Prince area.
Two Interagency Emergency Health Kits, which are large modules specially designed to provide crisis care for 10,000 people for three months, are set to ship to MAP partners already operating in Haiti. As conditions begin to stabilize and the country starts the rebuilding process, these shipments will help to provide for longer term healthcare needs of Haitians as they heal and put their lives back together.
Please continue to pray for the Haitian people and the aid workers who are serving them.
