Mission: Haitian Children’s Home (HCH) is an organization located in Jacmel, Haiti that was established in 2006. HCH has adopted a unique model for its children. Rather than being run as an orphanage, the children live in a family environment where the Directors of each home fulfill the roles of parents. The children learn to interact with each other as brothers and sisters. Since HCH has successfully created a home for these children, they are not available for adoption. The home is also unique as it is one of the only facilities in Haiti that accepts children over the age of 5 years old. Most organizations only accept children under the age of 5 as they are less likely to suffer from histories of abuse that will result in emotional issues. However, HCH targets those children who have the greatest need for a home, often based on their past history.
It is the focus of the organization to raise children within the Haitian culture, equipping them with the education, skills and spiritual foundation necessary to become Christian leaders in their community. The long term goal of HCH is to raise children that will affect the future of Haiti. The organization is changing Haiti, one life at a time.

We are sure most of you have been following the updates on CNN, Twitter, Facebook and local news. Our Joy In Hope team on the ground is still doing well. They are tired and overwhelmed, but are proving every minute that they are exactly where they are supposed to be. They are doing wonderful things for the community they call home. What they are seeing and doing is unbelievably taxing on their bodies and souls. we are also being completely blown away by the relief we are being able to get to our people. We have been working literally around the clock to stay in communication with our team in Jacmel, and coordinate aircraft and supplies to them from multiple locations in the US and the DR.

The Boys' Home
In September of 2008, Haitian Children’s Home (HCH), a Joy In Hope ministry, started The Boys’ Home as an extension of Joy In Hope’s existing scholarship program. The Boys’ Home program was initiated in order to address the need of providing quality education to high school aged children in remote areas. Youth living in rural areas of Haiti either experience limited access to secondary educational facilities or lack the necessary financial resources to attend the few available schools present. The Boys’ Home offers dedicated students the opportunity to complete their education by providing for their physical needs as they focus on their studies. The youth participating in this program are expected to demonstrate their dedication to their studies by meeting a number of requirements. They must adhere to a strict study schedule, maintain a certain grade average, complete household chores and participate in outreach efforts as a public service to their community. At the end of each school year, each boy is evaluated in order to determine if they will be allowed to continue to participate in the program for the following school year. The home will continue to expand to include up to 12 boys as funding becomes available.

Can I adopt one of the kids at the Haitian Children’s Home?
The children at the Haitian Children’s Home are not available for adoption. While they don’t legally have a mother or father, they do have a family. The model of the Haitian Children’s Home is designed to knit together close family relationships, both between their “brothers and sisters” and their “Dad and Mom” (Danny and Leann.) Most of our children have been living at the Haitian Children’s Home for 5+ years. We feel that our kids have been through enough trauma from separation from their birth families, and we want to do all we can at this point to foster healthy family attachment with their family here.
The staff of the Haitian Children’s Home believes firmly that adoption is a wonderful thing, with a strong spiritual precedent. We believe that through Christ we are all adopted into the family of God. Danny and Leann’s first child, Jabez, is a baby they have raised since birth and are in the process of adopting. One of our nannies has an adopted child, and our Stateside Support family, The Mangine’s, also have a child adopted from Haiti.
There are a lot of Haitian adoption orphanages; however, Haitian Children’s Home is not one of them. If you would like to speak with someone about Haitian adoption, please feel free to contact Gwenn Mangine at gwenn @haitianchildrenshome.org.
What is the cost to sponsor a child?
The short answer is $32/month. The long answer is $160/month. Here’s how it all works out. The cost of care for each child per month is $160. We understand that not everyone is able to afford that kind of monthly payment, so we have structured our program so that each child has four $32/month sponsors. It is the Haitian Children’s Home policy that 100% of your money goes directly to meeting the needs of your child. It supplies him or her with food, clothing and shoes, education, salaries for the nannies who care for them, medical treatment, and housing costs including utilities, building maintenance, and various orphanage upgrades. All of the administrative costs associated with the program are covered by private donations and volunteer labor. While this does add to our administrative work, we find it’s a good way to do things. Not only does it give more individuals the opportunity to participate in giving, it lessons the financial strain on the Haitian Children’s Home should a sponsor determine that he or she is no longer able to participate in the sponsorship program.
