Haitian School to Rise From Rubble Thru Orphans International Worldwide
Orphans International Worldwide (OIWW) announced today the creation of Orphans International Worldwide Haiti and the Colline Academie in Leogane, Haiti, near Port-au-Prince.
Leogane is 18 miles west of Port-au-Prince, on the road to Jacmel where OI Worldwide operates an orphanage, OI Haiti. The children of OI Haiti survived the quake unscathed.
OI Worldwide Advisory member Jimmy Toussaint, a member of one of Haiti's most prominent families, has agreed with his family to partner their Colline Academie with OIWW.
I founded Orphans International Worldwide in 1999 and I have been involved with disasters around the world. This allows us to continue our work with orphans from Hurricane Jeanne in Jacmel while beginning a new facility in Leogane.
As a former Wall Street banker, I am proud to be considered the father of the "Orphans International Movement," with more than 100 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) around the world.
Orphans International Worldwide is a non-governmental organization associated with the United Na-tions.
"OI Worldwide will offer children full care, and additional children family care," states OI Worldwide officer John Lee. Lee coordinated Orphans International Worldwide efforts in Sri Lanka following the Tsunami.
OIWW embraced family care - supporting orphaned children in their extended families - three years ago. Healthier psychologically, this approach is also 90% more cost effective.
"I decided to lead Orphans International into family care in 2008 as I realized how much more effective it was," says Luce.
The Monaco Red Cross, under the leadership of H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco, Sovereign Ruler, has pledged funding to roll-out family care to augment OI's full care in Jacmel.
"Sadly, our existing school in Leogane collapsed in the earthquake," states Jimmy Toussaint. "As Or-phans International begins to rebuild the school, we will house earthquake orphans in large tents with bunk beds at our compound."
The orphaned children in Orphans International family care will be educated initially in larger tents on the property.
Large tents are needed for the project, as well as sponsorship for the children and general contributions for supplies. Funding has already been received from the U.S. as well as China.
Child sponsorship is $50 per child. Each child in full care has five child sponsors, and each child in family care has two. The children are not available for adoption outside of Haiti.
The children will range between the ages of 4 and 8. OI Worldwide staff are on the ground working with the school principal to identify the most needy children. Their profiles and pictures will be posted on CharityHelp International and OIWW's websites as they are received.
Child sponsors receive a monthly report on their child in English. Haiti is only 3.5 hours from JFK and as the country stabilizes, sponsors will be encouraged to visit their sponsored children.
"I hope to be in Haiti to coordinate our new project in Leogane and check up with our kids in Jacmel," says Luce. He was there in Haiti ten weeks ago. OI Haiti is directed by Jacques Africot, who I trained in Indonesia after the Tsunami in 2005.
"Reconstruction efforts of Colline Academie will take earthquakes into serious consideration," Jason Buchheit, AIA, a member of OI Wordwide's Advisory Board, states. "Buildings in seismic prone areas in the U.S. are required to meet structural criteria which minimize building collapse during an earthquake."
"These requirements increase for essential facilities such as hospitals, police stations, or fire stations, ensuring that relief systems will remain in place in more catastrophic events. There are many ways to prevent unnecessary damage and loss of life during these types of events," Jason added.
CharityHelp International, OIWW's NGO partner, has donated a laptop with solar and satellite capacity to use in Leogane as OI Worldwide's Haitian command center.
The first major fundraising event for the project will be held at Webster Hall in New York City's East Village through their first Quarterly Arts Soiree, Sunday, February 28.
A smaller invitation-only fundraising event, "The World for Haiti," will occur next week, Jan. 27, at "World Wednesdays - One World". The benefit will be held off Times Square.
"I was raised by parents who believed Martin Luther King was America's hope. To launch this initiative as a bridge between the U.S. and the world's first freed slave republic on Dr. King's birthday fills me with enormous hope," Luce said.
Tax-deductible contributions for Orphans International Worldwide's efforts in Haiti may be made on-line. Checks may be made payable to CharityHelp International, memo: Orphans International Haiti, and sent to P.O. Box 1904, Annapolis, MD 21404.
