Mission: from the website:
We are the International Rescue Committee – a critical global network of first responders, humanitarian relief workers, healthcare providers, educators, community leaders, activists, and volunteers. Working together, we provide access to safety, sanctuary, and sustainable change for millions of people whose lives have been shattered by violence and oppression.
Our mission
Founded in 1933, the IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement services and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression.
Our work
The IRC is on the ground in 42 countries, providing emergency relief, relocating refugees, and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster. Through 24 regional offices in cities across the United States, we help refugees resettle in the U.S. and become self-sufficient.
Our efficiency
The IRC is consistently awarded high marks by charity watchdog groups and respected publications for the efficient use of its financial support and the effectiveness of its work. Of every $1 the IRC spends, 90¢ goes to programs and services that directly benefit refugees and war-affected populations.
Courageous beginnings
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent.
It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage — to move in the opposite direction."
— Albert Einstein, at whose suggestion the IRC was founded

Notes:
from the website:
Right now, the International Rescue Committee is deploying its Emergency Response Team to Haiti to deliver help to the devastated city of Port-au-Prince. The country was rocked by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday night. It was the most powerful quake to hit the impoverished country in more than 200 years. The Haitian Red Cross believes between 45,000 and 50,000 people have been killed and as many as 3 million people injured or made homeless.
Huge numbers of people in the Haitian capital lack food, clean water, shelter and medical care, even as one of the largest international relief efforts in recent history gets underway.
The IRC will be working with overwhelmed local aid groups to provide vital medical care, clean water and sanitation to the quake's survivors.
Our specialists are veteran first-responders who have quickly set up effective emergency programs around the world during violent conflicts and natural disasters, including last year's cyclone in Myanmar and the South Asian tsunami in 2005. The IRC is also supporting members of the Haitian-American community in Miami, New York and elsewhere, which is in the process of organizing a major response. Many of them are refugees who were resettled in the United States by the IRC.

Saving Lives in Haiti: How to Help
IRC is immensely grateful for the staggering outpouring of support and interest from all of you. We want to thank everyone who has called, faxed, emailed and written for the incredible generosity of spirit and for the many offers to volunteer in Haiti to help out with the emergency relief effort. We applaud you.
Here is some information about how you can best make a difference:
I want to volunteer: We are very grateful for your generosity, but IRC does not send volunteers to our overseas programs, even in emergencies. There are many other ways to help, however. Some are listed here.
If you'd like to do more than simply make a donation towards our work in Haiti, please consider:
Fundraising among your friends, family and community for the IRC. You can get started and set up your own personalized donation portal here on our site right away.
Spread the word on Facebook. Many IRC supporters are posting the following message as their Facebook status to spread the word about IRC's text-to-give campaign for Haiti: "I am donating my status update to rescue lives in Haiti. Text HAITI to 25383 to donate $5 to help the International Rescue Committee rescue lives. COPY & PASS THIS ON AS YOUR STATUS UPDATE"
Get the word out about our text-to-give campaign on Twitter and keep updated as we get news from our team in Haiti on our Twitter page.
I want to donate disaster relief items: Unfortunately, we cannot accept in-kind donations of disaster relief items from the general public. These items often include offers of air travel, clothing, food items, etc.
Additional information on why the International Rescue Committee and other non-governmental organizations adhere to these policies can be found on the "Volunteering" and "Donations-In-Kind" sections of the FAQ page of the Center for International Disaster Information. This web page also explains why cash donations are the most efficient way to provide assistance to those in need.
Thank you!
