* Help for Homelessness ~
Working To End Homelessness

Volunteers of America works to prevent and end homelessness for individuals and families. As one of the largest recipients of federal homeless assistance grants, Volunteers of America reaches out to homeless individuals through street outreach and mobile outreach services. Once Volunteers of America engages homeless individuals, youth and families with children, we stay with them for as long as it takes to return them to self-sufficiency — providing assistance that ranges from paying a first month’s rent to offering permanent supportive housing so that people with disabilities can become stable and productive members of their communities.

* Help for Housing ~
Providing Affordable Housing

For Volunteers of America and the people we support, a home is far more than shelter. It's the foundation of life. We guide individuals and families by providing not only safe, affordable housing, but also the vital support services they need to thrive.

We are one of the nation’s largest nonprofit providers of quality, affordable housing for low and moderate-income households. We create and manage housing for the homeless, families with children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, including physical and mental disabilities.

Wherever there are people who need homes, Volunteers of America will be there, extending a smile and a helping hand.

* Help for Long-Term Care ~
For over 100 years, Volunteers of America has responded to the nation's health care needs. Today, we are a major provider of professional long-term nursing care for seniors and others coping with illness or injury. We offer a continuum of services that extends to the elderly and disabled people requiring long-term health support, including nursing care, assisted living, memory care, home health care, rehabilitation and much more.

Volunteers of America owns and operates 25 health care facilities throughout the United States and is dedicated to providing supportive, nurturing environments with services designed specifically for each individual. Learn more about our individual facilities and services.

* Help for Mental Health ~
Fostering & Empowering

Volunteers of America provides services and supports to people with mental illness throughout our programs. We operate many programs for people who have spent long years in state hospital systems. Sometimes these individuals enter our services in nontraditional ways, maybe through homelessness, substance abuse, or tragically, the corrections system. However, a person comes to us, Volunteers of America focuses on assisting those with significant and persistent mental illness to live lives of independence in their communities. Our supports range from crisis hotlines to 24-hour residential supports, low-income housing options, counseling, medication management and assistance with the activities of daily living. In keeping with the tradition of our founders and our faith-based values, we believe that all individuals should be treated with respect and dignity and receive the individualized supports they need to live in their community.

* Help for Seniors ~
Continuing a Tradition of Service to Seniors

Volunteers of America’s services programs promote health and independence for the elderly. Volunteers of America is one of the nation's largest nonprofit providers of quality, affordable housing for seniors and a major provider of professional long-term care, including assisted living, home health care and nursing home care. Support services include senior centers, transportation, intergenerational programs, information and referral services, protective services, meal programs, handyman repair services and others.

* Help for Veterans ~
Assistance for Homeless Veterans

Nearly 154,000 veterans are homeless on any given night and twice as many experience homelessness during a year. Right now, the number of homeless Vietnam era veterans is greater than the number of service persons who died during that war. Already, veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are appearing in the homeless population.

Volunteers of America is committed to ending homelessness for those already on the street and preventing others from becoming homeless. Volunteers of America provides a wide array of well-designed and managed services to meet the specific needs of homeless veterans.

A Voice for Homeless Veterans

Volunteers of America is also an outspoken advocate for homeless veterans. In October 2006, the organization, along with the Corporation for Supportive Housing and the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, convened a policy leadership dialogue on the issue, producing a report, titled "Ending Homelessness Among Veterans Through Permanent Supportive Housing." Participants called on the 110th Congress to act quickly both to create more permanent supportive housing for disabled veterans and to target resources to increase income support, employment, health, and housing programs that assist all veterans.
