PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A group of animal advocates from Tennessee drove to Pikeville, Kentucky this weekend to offer help for the flooded-out animal shelter.
The shelter closed last week due to flooding in the area. The animals are staying with foster families in the interim.
The founder of the Lab and All Breed Rescue Network, Gina Austin led a group of people in hauling a horse trailer full of pet supplies from Brighton, Tennessee to Pikeville.
In a news release Monday, Austin said, "I had the access and means to obtaining these resources, which were donated from communities in Mississippi as well as the Greater Memphis area. We wanted to get these supplies here to Pike County to help these animals who have also been affected by this disaster.”
Pike County Deputy Judge/Executive John Doug Hays says the damage to the shelter was caused by a mine blowout. Hays says the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement inspected the area, made the call and will work to seal or drain the mine workings. It has also been included on the FEMA disaster declaration.
===================================================
URGENT......The Pike County Animals Shelter is currently closed due to a significant mud slide that destroyed our supply building with all foods, litter and several cages and equipment. The isolation building and kennels also sufeered significant damage. Rescues are encouraged to help. All animals are currently in foster homes and the shelter is not taking animals in during the cleanup period. Rescues please contact us if you can take animals. All pets available at the shelter are not listed. If you don't see your perfect pet please contact us or stop by, he/she may be here waiting for you!!!!
