Great Plains Food Bank accepting donations for Minot flood victims
The Great Plains Food Bank serve as the central collection point for donations of nonperishable food, personal care items and cleaning supplies to help residents in Minot and the surrounding area affected by flooding.

FARGO — The Great Plains Food Bank announced Thursday it will serve as the central collection point for donations of nonperishable food, personal care items and cleaning supplies to help residents in Minot and the surrounding area affected by flooding.

The products will be used for those seeking help at shelters and mobile feeding units, during clean-up efforts and at food pantries and other charitable feeding programs expected to see increased demand because of the flood.

“Whether it’s a few items or a few pallets, we know how passionately the Cass-Clay community responds to crisis,” Steve Sellent, program director for the food bank, stated in a news release. “With the severity of this disaster, we know that a tremendous amount of resources will be needed in the Minot region in the days and weeks ahead.”

Items may be dropped off at the Great Plains Food Bank at 1720 3rd Ave. N. in Fargo. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and during regular business hours starting Monday.

The items will be sorted, and the first truckload of food is scheduled to arrive this morning in Minot.

An estimated 15 or more semi-loads will be distributed to the Minot region through donations from various food banks, food industry donors and items collected from the community, the release stated.

To volunteer for the effort, call the Great Plains Food Bank at (701) 232-6219.

Food donations also will be collected through July at Fargo-Moorhead’s six Hornbacher’s stores, four Sunmart stores, two Cash Wise Foods stores and three Walmart stores. Collection barrels will be clearly marked at the stores’ front entrances.

Feeding Hope
The Great Plains Food Bank touches the lives of more than 52,000 children, seniors and working families each year who struggle with, or are at risk of hunger. Each year over 5 million pounds of surplus food is donated by local, regional and national food industry partners. This food is then distributed to people in need through our statewide network of 230 member food shelves, emergency shelters, soup kitchens and other charitable feeding program in 80 communities.
