Kathleen as a new phone number, new email address. She thought she would take this opportunity to say "Hello" as life seems to be moving at such a fast pace these days. She tells us:
We now have a 225,000 sf warehouse, six loading docks, the ability to build a mile of "wall" a day for housing, two story volunteer housing unit, and all thanks to Anchor Homes ! Ye for those in "free enterprise" understanding that we need teamwork between free enterprise and the DRO's !
We are still in desperate need of skilled volunteers. The contstruction phase is barely started -we have so far to go here in the aftermath of Katrina. If you would stop by the website - it gives a pretty clear picture of work that is being done and what is needed.
Mission:
1. Re-construction assistance - providing volunteers and materials where and when available.
2. Case Management: Advocating for client with grants, resources, and other needs.
3. Providing a warehousing HUD for Hancock County for material resources.
Working in the field, tools are are necessity. I have a utility truck with a Tommy Lift that hauls tools to keep the crews supplied - along with an 18 foot trailer for hauling materials and machines.
Currently I matrix in upto 150 volunteers a day from camps with an overflow of volunteers and move them quickly into positions in the field. The work orders are computerized, organized, and focus on the skilled as well as the unskilled. Teams of juveniles are welcome with solid supervision. We are desperately in need of skilled volunteers - carpenters, plumbers, electricians and other skilled trades including roofers (a skilled supervisor in roofing would be a great benefit).
As a Case Manager for the Long Term Recovery Committee I am able to present cases to the committee for "Money", "Manpower", and "Materials".
One of the thrusts for this office is to start recruiting local volunteers. Given there were 204,000 houses destroyed or damaged by the storm from Ms and La - then we have 204,000 potential volunteers for "barn building". This week we have managed to recruit three full time local volunteers - two in the field and one in the office. This is a good start given we only started on this road last week. Three down, 203,997 potential volunteers left to recruit.
I will keep you all posted on further progress.

The City of Waveland Volunteer Coordination office is pleased to announce that 60-80 skilled carpenter volunteers will be arriving Monday who will be here several months. They are willing to work thru the LTRC. At this time they have brought me list of 40 homes they have had prior contact with and wish to work on them first. I have no problem with this and will meet with them Monday.
In the meantime I have those homeowners coming in to fill out forms appropriate for the LTRC. Some of these homes will qualify under the LTRC guidelines, some will not. At this time it is my intent to facilitate and merge this group into the LTRC platform allowing them the flexibility to work on "pet rocks". We all have these "pet rocks" as we form a personal bonds and attachment with people
we come across along the path to recovery.
This office also has managed to book other volunteer groups starting in September. Some as small as 2, some as large as 65. These groups have a mixed skill levels.

I will keep you all posted on further progress.
-> 11/6 Good Morning!

Office Phone: (228) 466-4630
Cell Phone: (228) 209-8822
I have a new phone number, new email address, and I thought I would take this opportunity to say
"Hello" as life seems to be moving at such a fast pace these days - I rarely have time to stop and
chat with friends.
The volunteer operation here at City Hall in Waveland is going very well and grows in leaps and
bounds everyday. Soon there will be a new assistant on the horizon as well - courtesy of the City
of Waveland and the WIN program.
We are still in desperate need of skilled volunteers. The contstruction phase is barely started -
we have so far to go here in the aftermath of Katrina. If you would stop by the website - it gives
a pretty clear picture of work that is being done and what is needed.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

8/28: CARPENTERS BECOMING AVAILABLE THIS COMING WEEK: see notes below.
I have been working on relief in Waveland/Bay Saint Louis since the onset of the storm. My primary job is Case Manager, Home Assessments and directing volunteer crews. I work directly with the City of Waveland out of City Hall working on projects all over Hancock County.
Mission:
1. Re-construction assistance - providing volunteers and materials where and when available.
2. Case Manager: Advocating for client with grants, resources, and other needs.
3.. Salvage yard available for material - both supply and donations
4. Advocacy assistance for Hancock Couny residents for assistance with FEMA claims, grant applications, and material procurement.
Working in the field, tools are are necessity. I have a utility truck with a Tommy Lift that hauls tools to keep the crews supplied - along with an 18 foot trailer for hauling materials and machines.
Currently I matrix in upto 100 volunteers a day from camps with an overflow of volunteers and move them quickly into positions in the field.
Check on the above link to my website.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

I will keep you all posted on further progress.

by KatyJoan, 11/13/05 19:18 ET I was asked today to be the co-ordinator for the National Coat Drive for the Citizens Action Team.
This job will entail the co-ordination of donations and deliveries to all affected areas in the Gulf States Region.
I belive the figure of 10,000 coats was mentioned during the phone conversation this morning. Makes my few hundred coats here rather "humble" in the big picture.
My coats will be leaving by semi this week for Waveland. The need is great for them "now" rather than later. I will still be in Waveland for Thanksgiving.
Looking forward to working with all the shelters on their "coat" needs.

by KatyJoan, 11/13/05 8:17 ET After a long discussion with some residents of Waveland yesterday - it has been determined to send all the coats I have down via semi this week as they are needed sooner than later.
Now if any of the surrounding towns need coats - PLEASE contact me and make arrangements to pick up coats from Waveland. What is left over in Waveland the day after Thanksgiving is going to be shipped to New Orleans. In fact - everything at the Waveland Market is being shipped to New Orleans after Thanksgiving.
So if you need something - now is the time to speak up and talk to Pete at the Waveland Market.
