If you are looking for a way to help the many people (especially those that can least afford the losses they sustained) who were victims of the devastating Hurricane IKE, I hope you will consider channeling that help through the Second Mile Mission Center. We opened our doors only a few hours after the hurricane had completed its destruction in our area, and those doors have been open virtually from daylight to dark since that time, as our staff and volunteers have been working long hours to help people in desperate need. Where we normally see 15 to 20 families a day, we have had over 200 families on several days since the storm. Last week we helped over 4100 individuals in 1025 families, and they continue to come in as word spreads that we are a source of help. No one has been turned away without receiving help in the form of food, water, furniture, and/or clothing, all distributed with individual counseling and a hug where appropriate, to show that someone really cares about them.
While many have been helped, I want to report to you that the needs are still great. Even today there are hundreds of thousands without electricity, shelter, and food. The needs will be with us for months to come as we dig out and continue the cleanup and rebuilding process. Since our board and supporters provide funds that cover 100% of our operating cost, I can assure you that any financial help you can provide will go directly to those in need, with zero administrative cost, and will usually be leveraged by a factor of more than 100% because we are members of the Houston Food Bank where we buy good food at a fraction of retail cost.
As many of you know, after serving on the board for seven years, I was made Chairman of the Board of the Second Mile Mission in Stafford, Texas on May 1, 2008, coincidently the same day I stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Knowledge Systems. Jesus said that much is expected from those who have been blessed by much. I hope you will consider helping through Second Mile as you are able.
