Notes:
Make sure you have gone through the First Level of training at:
http://www.citizencommandcenter.org/shelters/show/1076
If so, you are now ready for your first assignment.
1. Use Google (or any other search engine) to search for "food pantry" for your city, town, or region. Find a few "food pantries" or food banks.
2. Use the "search function" in the database to see if any of these food pantries are in the database already.
Instructions for the search function:
http://www.citizencommandcenter.org/shelters/show/3020
3. If they are not in the database already, then enter them using these instructions:
http://www.citizencommandcenter.org/shelters/show/1573
Here are some tips on how to find the required info from a website:
http://www.citizencommandcenter.org/shelters/show/3185
MAKE SURE TO ADD THE "AVAILABILITIES" at the end... without the availabilities, the system will not know what the facility's role is in life.
4. Let your supervisor know that you have finished.
The point is to learn how to reseach on the web and enter data. We ask new volunteers to do it for their home regions, before assigning them to help in a disaster zone. Your work does not go to waste, just because you are not working in an active disaster zone. ALL data in the database helps "prepare" a region for disaster. You never know when a disaster is going to hit your region.
Other relief facilities that are important during a disaster include:
- free medical clinics
- animal shelters
- soup kitchens / community suppers
- homeless shelters
- councils on aging / senior centers
- churches that offer social services
- social service organizations that offer "case management"
- local charitable organizations (like Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army, or any local group that helps people that are in crisis)
If you are excited to continue and have not heard back from your supervisor yet, feel free to continue to find organizations and enter them. Look for the above kind of organizations, and research and enter!
