News Flash -
Cedar Falls Flooding - Updated 6/9/08 7:30 p.m.The City of Cedar Falls is predicting that the Cedar River will crest at 99 feet by early Tuesday, June 10. The previous record was set in 1999 at 96.2 feet which, is where the river should be at on Monday.
The City has placed mitigation and emergency operation plans in place at this time. The following areas may be affected by this flooding:

4th Avenue, Grant, Greeley, Independence, Lincoln, Lone Tree, Cambridge, Bloomfield, Skyview, Clai, Central, Center, Longview, Western, Jaclyn, Stickfort, Pien and Cypress.

UPDATED INFORMATION:
Southbound 218 offramp onto Highway 57 is now closed.
Barricades will be set up to block off the following intersections to traffic. Center and Fitken and Lincoln and North Main Street.

Utility Parkway at Waterloo Road is now closed to through traffic.

Persons in areas where flooding is expected should watch closely and heed warnings.

Sand and sand bags are available at the following locations:
Gross Steel on Lincoln Street, North Cedar Fire Station, Clair and Central and also at Public Works (15th and State Street).

The Red Cross will be setting up a shelter at the UNI West Gym beginning Sunday at 4:00 p.m. for those displaced by the flood waters.

News Conference at 5:00 a.m.
A news conference is scheduled for 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 11 to update the media on the flooding and flood related damage in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Weather permitting, the news conference will take place at the corner of Franklin and W. 1st Streets in Cedar Falls – in front of the Flowerama store, across the street from the Cedar Falls Historical Society Ice House Museum.

The rain location will be the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

Volunteers needed throughout the night
Volunteers are needed throughout the night to assist with sandbagging efforts.
Volunteers who are walking to the area should report to one of two checkpoints: the corner of First and Main Street, or the 300 Block of E. 4th Street. Volunteers must tell the National Guard personnel at the checkpoints that they are there to help with sandbagging -- otherwise they will be turned away.

If driving, volunteers are asked to report to the North Parking Lot of the UNI-Dome on the UNI campus.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED URGENTLY
Volunteers are needed throughout the night to assist with sandbagging efforts. New volunteers are needed to relieve other volunteers who have been working throughout the day. Volunteers are needed and must report to the North Parking lot of the UNI Dome to assist with sandbags. Volunteers must not travel downtown or go near the levy. Transportation will be provided to volunteers where help is needed.
Residents in Black Hawk County can apply for FEMA assistance under Federal Disaster #1763. This has been an ongoing Presidential Disaster Declaration since the May 25th tornado. The FEMA assistance application center is located in the West Gym parking lot.

The evacuation center in UNI’s McLeod Center will provide temporary refuge and a location for people to make other arrangements as necessary. The West Gym on the UNI campus is being used by the Red Cross to house evacuees and those needing overnight and/or long-term shelter.

Presidential Disaster Declared
The City of Cedar Falls has issued the following urgent announcements in light of the flooding:
A Presidential Disaster has been declared. People may call FEMA for assistance at 1-800-621-3362.
People with Gas and Electric Emergencies are directed to call 277-8119.

For people in the high ground area of North Cedar who now want to be evacuated, the National Guard has set up a shuttle with the assistance of Cedar Falls Schools to the Red Cross Evacuation Center in the McLeod Center.

The City of Cedar Falls has issued the following urgent announcements in light of the flooding:
The Mayor has ordered an immediate mandatory evacuation of everyone in the following area from the following boundary north and east towards the River:
On Franklin Street from 6th Street to the North; on 6th Street to the East toward Main Street; on Main Street from 9th Street to the North, and all downtown areas from these streets towards the River. Unauthorized vehicles will be removed beginning at 3:00 p.m.
People who are evacuating are urged to turn off their power, utilities, water and gas. Security will be provided for the area to safeguard property by the Cedar Falls Police Department and the National Guard.
Volunteers may remain in this area if they are assisting with the sandbagging efforts. Volunteers will be needed throughout the night. It cannot be emphasized enough that volunteers are needed and must report to the North Parking lot of the UNI Dome to assist with sandbags. Volunteers must not travel downtown or go near the levy. Transportation will be provided to volunteers where help is needed.

URGENT FLOOD INFORMATION
The City of Cedar Falls has issued the following urgent announcements in light of the flooding:
The City is urging all those people who may be affected by flooding to make immediate preparations to evacuate upon short notice.
There is no parking on streets in the following area from the following boundary north and east towards the River:
No parking on Franklin Street from 6th Street to the North; no parking on 6th Street to the East toward Main Street; no parking on Main Street from 9th Street to the North, and all downtown areas from these streets towards the River. Unauthorized vehicles will be removed beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The City of Cedar Falls has issued the following urgent announcements:
According to flood forecasts provided by the National Weather Service, the river level is expected to exceed the top of the flood levy. Sandbagging of the levy area will be taking place soon to protect the downtown area; however, merchants and residents in the downtown area need to prepare for possible evacuation later Tuesday.

Cedar Falls officials are urging downtown residents and merchants to prepare for evacuation by taking all steps necessary to safeguard their property. The area should be closed for business immediately. Cedar Falls police are blocking off downtown area immediately. There will be no one allowed in the area.
Further updates will be forthcoming.

The City of Cedar Falls has issued the following urgent announcements in light of the flooding:
The river level is at 99.19 feet, as of 6:43 a.m.Tuesday, June 10, 2008. The river is expected to crest at 100 feet as of 1:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, 2008, which is below the top of the flood levy. There is no imminent danger based upon the predicted crest of downtown flooding. City officials continue to monitor the situation hourly.

All streets North of the river should be considered under water. Road closures are as follows:

West 1st Street from Highway 57 to East City Limits.
Center Street from West 1st Street to Lone Tree Road.
Highway 218, all on and off ramps at Highway 57.
Waterloo Road at Utility Parkway Highway 57 off Ramp.
Lone Tree Road from Big Woods to Highway 218.
Lone Tree Road from Center Street to Black Hawk Park.
Waterloo Road Exit Southbound between Waterloo Road and West 18th Street.
1400 to 1500 block of Bluff Street.

Volunteers are encouraged to report to 15th and State Street to assist with filling sandbags, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

People are urged to stay away from the flooded areas and to avoid sightseeing as it hinders public safety and rescue efforts.

Flooding Update 6:45 a.m. June 10
The Cedar Falls Public Works complex has been flooded. Floodwaters from Dry Run Creek broke through a temporary dike early Tuesday. The recycling center and refuse transfer station will be closed until floodwaters recede.
There will be regular garbage pickup.

A large sewage lift station in the complex is in jeopardy which could cause problems in the sanitary sewer system in areas adjacent to Dry Run Creek.
Updated Flood Information - June 9, 2008 7:25 p.m.

The Cedar River in Cedar Falls is scheduled to Crest at 100.0 feet on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 according to the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service. Flood level is 88.0 feet. This is a record level and the City is urging all residents in the 100-year flood plain to prepare for a flood event. The City has placed mitigation and emergency operation plans in place.

The predicted crest of the river will be below the top of the flood levy. There is no imminent danger based on the predicted crest of downtown flooding. City officials will be monitoring the situation hourly. Further announcements will be forwarded as needed.

The City has recommended residents north of the river in flood prone areas to evacuate. This is a voluntary evacuation. No mandatory evacuation exists. Residents should stay away from flood prone areas.
