Why We Need YOU:
Most of the programs offered through the Office of Disaster
Response are volunteer-driven. It is only with the help of
caring people from around the world that we are able to
respond to the needs of people affected by Hurricane
Katrina.
· ODR needs volunteers in Louisiana to:
· do the hard work of gutting and eventually rebuilding
a flooded home
· offer a listening ear to folks who just need to talk
· cheerfully prepare and serve a hearty meal to a hurting
community
· serve in the medical and mental health fields.
· assist our staff in running our Home Coming Centers and
the programs for residents that will be offered out of
those centers.
Adult groups:
If an adult group includes a parent who would like to
bring their child who is 16 or older, that is acceptable.
The child must live and work with the parent at all times.
There will be no difference in the way a group of this
type is handled than the way a regular adult group is
handled.
What ODR does to support our Volunteers:
ODR is able to provide well organized, well directed,
productive and meaningful work for volunteers. We are
also able to provide you with good information about
your work in New Orleans as well as the condition of
New Orleans itself prior to your arrival. ODR provides
volunteer housing on a first come first serve basis.
All of our housing spaces are located in diocesan
churches. Volunteers are provided with comfortable
beds, shower facilities and access to a fully equipped
kitchen. Our individual housing bases have created
resources lists for our volunteer groups including
information about area restaurants, gas stations,
pharmacies, Laundromats, etc.
When working with our gutting crews, ODR will provide all
tools necessary for the work. There is no charge for any
volunteer experience in the Diocese of Louisiana. If groups
wish to make a contribution to their housing space to help
offset expenses, that would be appreciated and can be
arranged through individual housing base coordinators.
Who is an ODR Volunteer?:
An ODR volunteer can be ANYONE 16 years old or older.
It is not necessary to have specific skills to volunteer
in disaster relief. Groups of any number are welcome to
coordinate their trips through:

(show/hide changes)Mon Feb 04 17:27:08 +0000 2008 by LTel:notes: Once a single family home, Chalstrom House now serves as
a Parish House for St. Andrew's, housing parish offices
and hosting parish community meetings of all types. St.
Andrew's Church family has opened the doors of Chalstrom
House to share their space with volunteers traveling to
the New Orleans area to work in disaster relief.
Space available to volunteers includes sleeping space for
15 beds, a kitchen and 3 full baths. There is common area
in Chalstrom House that is available to volunteer groups
when St. Andrew's doesn't already have it reserved.
Army beds with foam mattresses are provided for each resident.
When staying in this house, individuals will need to bring
sleeping bag/bedding, pillow and pillow case and personal
items.
As in all of our volunteer housing spaces, volunteers are
responsible for their own meals and transportation. When
teams are scheduled into Chalstrom House, they will be
provided with more detailed information on the house as
well as a variety of resources (grocery, laundry, restaurants,
etc.) are nearby, most within walking distance.
Volunteers are asked to not park in the circle drive or on
Zimple st. as this interferes with the school. Guests are
urged to park on Carrolton Ave.
We are grateful beyond words for the efforts that so many
have put forth in organizing volunteer groups coming to
Louisiana. It is because of caring groups and individuals
like you that so many hurricane victims are able to begin
to rebuild their lives. This process of relief and
recovery will be going on for quite some time. We need your
help!
After reviewing the information on our web site, if you
have any questions about volunteering, please contact
ODR's volunteer coordinators via email or phone
(504-895-4304).
Thank you!
