Notes:

There are two parts to this database entry.

1. Country Codes (for using in the State) field
2. How to list Phone Numbers (so international callers can access local numbers)

1. Country Codes:

Right now, the database is having growing pains, and we request your patience while we figure out how to add countries into the existing architecture. We are sorry that we built a system that is so "US-centric". Please forgive us. We will fix this. It's not a real good excuse, but the database has grown to include over 2,000 organizations and we didn't expect it to be serving international organizations so quickly.

If you are entering a facility/organization outside the US, please put a "country code" into the "state" block, and enter the country's full name in the "region" block.

2. Telephone Numbers, How to List Phone Numbers

In an attempt to be less "US-centric", please be considerate of international callers/users. Here are some suggestions...

If you are listing a phone number "for" the US, please put +1 in front of the number. So my number when dialed "from" a US phone is: 1 978 266 2775. In an international listing, it would be listed: +1 978 266 2775.

International calling conventions have established "country codes" for each country, that all public phone systems on earth adhere to.

The "country code" for the US is "1".

The "country code" for Japan is "81".

The "country code" for the UK (Great Britain), it's "44".

How one dials "out" of a country and how one dials "long distance" in each country differs slightly, but the general convention is to put "+" and then the country code for that country.

Or simply put (local) in front of the number so that the caller can add the country code. So my number would be: (local)978 266 2775

DETAILS:

In the US, to dial "long distance" to another US number, you have to put a "1" in front of the phone number. To dial me, for example, if you do not live in my town, you have to dial 1 978 266 2775.

To dial the same number from the US TO the UK, you'd have to put a "011" in front of it, and add the UK country code: 011 44 978 266 2775. That's because the US has a telecom convention that requires people to dial "011" in front of the country code, to get an international line.

On the other hand, if you are in Great Britain, or most other countries, to dial "to" the US, you have to dial "00" to get an international line. So to dial "to" the US, you'd dial 00 1 978 266 2775.

By using "+" in front of the number, you indicate that the next number is the "country code", and the person who is dialing can figure out how to get an international line, based on the country that they are calling from.

So the bottom line is to list "+1" in front of US-based numbers, and "+44" (or whatever country code" plus "(0)" in front of non-US-based numbers.

Or at least give an indication whether the number of "local" to the organization you are working on.

Listing the country code in front of the number helps international callers, so that they don't have to look it up. But if you don't know the country code, please at least put "local" in front of the number, like this: (local) 1 978 266 2775..

TOLL FREE NUMBERS

In most countries, toll free numbers can only be dialed from the "country of origin". So if it's a US 1800 number, then only people "in" the US can use that number. If if you find/list a number and it's an Australian toll free number, listed on a website for an org that is physically located "in" Australia, then that toll free number probably can only be used "in" Australia.

So if you are listing a 1800 number that you got FROM a website that is for an org based IN Australia, then please list "(local)" next to that number. Like this:

(local) 1800 266 2775
