The Harrison County Health Department will be available to us on Friday November 9th from 10am-12pm. If these dates are in conflict with your schedule, you may send a proxy to represent your organization. The mission of this meeting will be to educate future members and affiliates on what a VOAD/COAD is and how it affects our organizations and the communities we serve. This meeting will be a large event that will give organizations, who would like to participate in the development of the SMVOAD, a chance to collaborate. This meeting is a prelude to an enrollment event that will be the stage for organizing the SMVOAD's mission, member elections, bylaw acceptance, and all other official VOAD business. At this stage, the meetings are to maintain momentum and lay the foundation for a strong organization. As our local VOAD meets and develops an organizational structure and assess the agencies involved in disaster response, in and out of the state, the local VOAD strengthens. The development of this organization is vital in our community's response in future disasters. I hope all of you are excited as I am in the development of this greatly needed community resource. The South Mississippi Regional VOAD and University of Southern Mississippi Center for Policy and Resiliency has planned a Mississippi Gulf Coast Oil Spill Disaster Recovery Summit for June 30th in Long Beach, MS. The Summit will focus on Addressing the Potential Long Term Impacts on Our Environment, Our Economy and Well-Being of all MS Gulf Coast Citizens and will feature panel discussions and speakers. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has deployed a National Response Team member to Mississippi who has been attending forums and is serving on the planning team for the Summit. This PDA Team member serves as Mississippi’s liaison to the National PDA Oil Spill Workgroup; assessing need in the Gulf Coast and planning PDA’s response. Lutheran Episcopal Services in Mississippi has two camps related to the oil spill response efforts: Camp Victor and Mission on the Bay. Several non-profit organizations and institutions have sent teams for extended stays at these camps, including two dozen NCCC volunteers from AmeriCorp.
