Notes:
Feeding America San Diego is the newest Feeding America member food bank and the only non-profit in San Diego County that has access to Feeding America nationally donated food by national manufacturers such as Kraft, Del Monte, and Kellogg's.
The donated food is free to Feeding America San Diego. We only have to pay for the transportation costs. Consequently, we can access food for only 10 cents per pound.
This makes us one of the most effective and efficient hunger-relief non-profits in San Diego County
Feeding America San Diego is one of Feeding America's newest member food banks with our very first distribution occurring on October 9th, 2007.
Shortly after our first distribution, fire storms struck San Diego County and we responded by bringing in 27 truckloads of food and other emergency supplies to assist with the relief efforts all within the first seven days. Since then we have continued to help those most in need - young children, working families, the elderly, and the homeless.
We are proud to say that within our first year of operations we will have provided nearly three million pounds of emergency food to hungry families in San Diego County with most of our food being distributed without a warehouse, forklift, or pallet jack. We project that next fiscal year we will distribute over 10 million pounds of food to those most in need.
We are currently rolling out several initiatives: The Healthy Food Initiative, the Children's Nutrition Initiative, and the Senior Nutrition Initiative. Other programs include the BackPack Program, Fresh Rescue, Food Stamp Outreach, Mobile Food Pantry, and our Reclamation Project.
But we can't do it alone. We need your help. More than 35.5 million Americans -12% of the population and 17% of our children don't have enough food. Locally, we have over 309,000 people experiencing poverty in San Diego County with over 600,000 people living in San Diego County living in Food Insecure households - please help us help them.
Thank you for your assistance.

"2nd Harvest Food Bank representative, Gerry McDonald, says that 2nd Harvest is providing more than food; he said they got a big truckload of washers and dryers delivered from a corporate donor and didn’t know what to do with them (someone immediately jumped up and said “Ramona can use them right now”, to which he responded “You got them – they are on their way!”); he said they also had horse feed donated to them; Proctor and Gamble delivered several truckloads of donations." -> Removed old notes LTel 11/24/08:
