Our Mission Statement:
Disaster Response: To ensure that the animal holocaust that was
Katrina is never repeated. To be there when a disaster is imminent
and to see to the evacuation of the pets of those who can least
afford to leave their homes - the sick, the elderly and the poor.
Their animals may be all that they have and ensuring that they are
safe may mean saving their very lives as well.
Disaster Training: Train Volunteers to be FEMA qualified to enter
disaster zones.
Shelter Rescue: To create foster homes for abandoned and abused
animals.
To rescue, rehabilitate and nurture them to health and find them
quality, permanent homes.
To stop the killing of healthy animals in overcrowded shelters by
teaching and implementing spaying and neutering.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the MuttShack Foundation
rescued over 3,000 animals. Like Pugsley the Pug who swam to the
top of his owner's refrigerator where he survived for seven weeks,

And the German shepherd, Katrina's longest recorded survivor -
trapped in her home for 71 days only to be discarded when her
owners returned home to collect their "valuables".
MuttShack is active in assisting with Louisianna disaster
evacuation planning to make sure no pets are left behind during
a disaster.

MuttShack, established in 1968, is non-profit, and a project
of the National Heritage Foundation.
'Muttshackers' rescue animals from shelters, rehabilitate and
nurture them to health in homes ('MuttShacks') and find them
quality, permanent new families.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the MuttShack Foundation
rescued over 3,000 animals. Like Pugsley the Pug who swam to the
top of his owner's refrigerator where he survived for seven weeks,
eating the mold on the surrounding walls as the flood waters receded.
And the German shepherd, Katrina's longest recorded survivor -
trapped in her home for 71 days only to be discarded when her
owners returned home to collect their "valuables".
MuttShack is active in assisting with Louisianna disaster
evacuation planning to make sure no pets are left behind during
a disaster.
MuttShack provides an online Animal Rescue Certification FEMA
class to train volunteers to assist animals in disasters.
In 2005, founder Amanda St. John was honored with special awards
from the House of Representatives and the City of Los Angeles for
rescue efforts and community service.
What Makes MuttShacks Different?
We don't spend our money on buildings, staff and infrastructures.
We don't maintain a work force to feed and walk animals. Instead our
shelters are created in homes. Many people have already experienced
a dog rescue. It is no different, except this time they have the
support of experts, and a network of support to promote the re-homing
of their rescued pet.
MuttShack actively supports creations of dog parks, pet friendly venues,
pet-friendly hotels and apartments and a society that loves to share
their lives with animals.
