Notes:
The Jesse Tree Volunteer ranges from the professional,
medical worker, computer programmer, grant-writer,
fundraiser or networker, to the clerical worker,
volunteer nurse or helper who can assist the staff
in the delivery of care to client. Bilingual volunteers
are especially valuable, as 30% of the community is
Spanish-speaking. Non-professional volunteers can assist
in the daily activities of the many projects. Friday
Food Fairs, God's Fan Club and the annual drives are
especially good events for civic or church-group
volunteers, students and children, as the Food Fairs
are set-up like a Farmer's Market to provide nutritional
food, medical screening and socail service enrollment.
The other projects require many hands to collect items
and distribute them. The specific projects, such as the
Food Box project or HELP may require driving and/or
transportation. However, there are no age limits and
anyone who can answer a phone, hold a hand or say a
prayer can be a Jesse Tree volunteer. In the wake of
the recent hurricane, The Jesse Tree has provided
services to nearly 2,000 evacuees. We are providing
access to the internet for FEMA applications, a special
resource guide for evacuees hyperlinked with all
necessary applications and websites; cold water, juice
and snacks, bagged lunches, food boxes, hygiene kits,
laundry detergent, gasoline vouchers, assistance in
locating shelter and housing, clothing and furnishing
and on-going case-management.
Skills
Jesse Tree volunteers must be kind, compassionate, at-ease
and patient with elderly, sick or people in distress.
Bilingual Spanish-speaking volunteers are a big help.
Professional skills and clerical skills are needed, as
well as people who can lift heavy items (wheelchairs,
food boxes, etc) and people who can help manage large
events (such as the Food Fairs). Volunteers are trained
and greatly appreciated. Virtually every program or project
of The Jesse Tree is made possible because of volunteer
efforts. The Jesse Tree has offices on Galveston Island,
the Mainland, the Bolivar Peninsula and in Brazoria County.
