cat_notes: -> Removed old notes LTel 1/23/10: ----------------------------------- FROM THE WEBSITE (PUBLISHED 5/7/07): Heart to Heart's Effort Helps Greensburg Residents Focus on the Future As residents poured back into Greensburg, they got their first glimpse of the destruction from the May 4 tornado that struck this small farming community. The F5 storm reduced homes and businesses to kindling and rubble. Nearly 95 percent of the buildings in town were totally destroyed by the tornado, which packed 205-mph winds and cut a swath 2 miles wide. Residents picked through the ruins for personal documents and artifacts before having to leave for their temporary shelters in nearby towns. As one resident walked to her vehicle, she turned to a Heart to Heart volunteer and shouted: "We'll be back. We're going to make it!" She has reason to believe that the community will rise from the rubble: Today, President Bush declared Greensburg a "major disaster area," which makes federal funding available to reconstruction projects. Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and FEMA Director David Paulison toured the devastation in Greensburg ahead of the President's visit, which is slated for Wednesday. Meanwhile, Heart to Heart's mobile clinic was very busy. We're the sole healthcare provider in town, now that the town's only hospital and clinic were destroyed by the twister. Dr. Gary Morsch, our president and founder, coordinated the medical response. "We continued to see a variety of minor injuries," he said, "but we also saw many residents for the first time. Beyond the bumps and bruises, we observed a tight-knit community that's still struggling with the major trauma of Friday night's tornado." You can help us bring healing to this community. Support our ongoing relief efforts in one or more of the following ways: Volunteer: We need medical volunteers to assist in our clinic, but we also need volunteers to staff our collection sites. Other volunteers will be needed as we move into the recovery phase. Call our Volunteer Center today at 913-764-5200. Donate much-needed items. We are collecting specific products at all Sam's Club locations in Kansas City and Wichita. Look for the FedEx trailer near the store o in the parking lot, and you'll find a friendly Heart to Heart volunteer to help you unload your donated supplies. Support us financially. We are offering a variety of medical services to emergency workers and residents in Greensburg. Your cash donation will ensure that we can continue to provide these valuable services. Give an online donation by clicking here, by calling us at 913-764-5200, or by mailing your check or money order to us at 401 S. Clairborne, Suite 302, Olathe, KS 66062. Every little bit helps. The folks in Greensburg are counting us to deliver health and hope. We are counting on you to help us bring healing to these good people. --------------------------------- ...connecting you to a world in need.
