Busy times for disaster workers in Greensburg, Kansas. Several
HCRN staff members spent time in Kansas working on damage assessments
and planning for recovery work. As is often the case, even the photos
and video of the destruction can't portray the massive loss. About
220 square blocks of this small town were wiped out, 960 homes and
120 businesses.
HCRN is calling for regional volunteers to assist in the clean up.
Because of the distance to nearby towns, we do not have access to
volunteer housing at this time. Most hotels are about an hour from
Greensburg (SEE HOPE CITY DETAILS BELOW) Please contact our office
or watch the website as this situation continues to develop. Pastor
Jeff Turner at the First Missionary Church of Dodge City is
coordinating the volunteer work teams. You can contact him at:

"Hope City Kansas" will house volunteers working to rebuild
homes in Greensburg, a town devastated by a tremendous tornado
earlier this month.
Hope City: rebuilding homes, restoring lives
"Hope City Kansas" will be the second mobile volunteer base camp
operated by Hope Crisis Response Network. The first camp operates
in Gulfport, Mississippi, providing assistance to families devastated
by Hurricane Katrina. "Hope City Kansas" will include two bunkhouse
mobile units, with sleeping accomodations for 40; a restroom and
shower unit and a mobile kitchen.
$300,000 will purchase the necessary equipment and provide the setup
costs for the camp to be ready for volunteers by August. This
aggressive fundraising campaign will ensure that homes will be
under construction this fall in hard-hit Greensburg.
HCRN needs help in three ways:
Pray - Ask for blessing and wisdom as the HCRN staff moves forward
with the ministry work of restoring lives.
Give - Friends, volunteers, individuals and churches can be part of
this ministry through financial gifts. God has provided an open door
and we want to move quickly in the recovery process.
Go - Volunteers will be needed beginning this August. HCRN has made
an initial two-year commitment to the building effort in Greensburg.
Thank you for your generous gifts.

Hope Crisis Response Network - HCRN is a not-for-profit
501c3 organization located in Northern Indiana. The mission
of HCRN during times of disaster is to: 1) coordinate and
deploy volunteers, resources, and financial assistance to
the affected areas; 2) serve as advocates to help victims
obtain assistance from appropriate agencies and organizations;
and 3) assist in devising and implementing post-disaster long
term recovery plans for local communities.
Volunteers are the most valuable and vital resource for any
recovery. It is not only our responsibility to provide
well-trained volunteers but to equip them with the tools they
need to do the job. The secret to having motivated volunteers
is to be well prepared and take good care of them. We work
within the community to make sure that each of our projects
is well planned and managed in a safe and friendly working
environment.
When a disaster is declared, HCRN is called upon to provide
assistance in all four stages of a disaster:
Stage One- The Emergency
or the 1st Responder
Medical
Security
Food for distribution
Coordinating effective donations
Coordinating volunteer response
Establishing local partnerships
Stage Two- The Relief

VOAD Meeting Notes 5/22/07:
HCRN is making a 2 year committment to the recovery.
Currently building housing and getting trailers for
families. Looking for a site to place the units.
-Housing will be for volunteers. They have volunteers
committed to coming for 10 weeks.
-Coordinating with Pastor Jeff Turner at the First
Missionary Church in Dodge City. They aren't affiliated
with the church but have prior relations with them.
-Housing units will arrive the last week of 7/07
-Focus will be on rebuilding mainly the uninsured or
severely underinsured families.
-Several items have been donated (ie. Sprung Huts) to
house materials.
-One of the Sprung Huts will house the temporary library
until another can be built
-They have donors supplying building materials and more
will be coming.
-------------------------------------------------------
"Hope City Kansas" will house volunteers working to rebuild
homes in Greensburg, a town devastated by a tremendous tornado
earlier this month.
We are called to rebuild and restore.

Community Education -> From their weekly email update:
Busy times for disaster workers in Greensburg, Kansas. Several
HCRN staff members spent time in Kansas working on damage assessments
and planning for recovery work. As is often the case, even the photos
and video of the destruction can't portray the massive loss. About
220 square blocks of this small town were wiped out, 960 homes and 120 businesses.
HCRN is calling for regional volunteers to assist in the clean up.
Because of the distance to nearby towns, we do not have access to
volunteer housing at this time. Most hotels are about an hour from
Greensburg. Please contact our office or watch the website as this
situation continues to develop. Pastor Jeff Turner at the First
Missionary Church of Dodge City is coordinating the volunteer work
teams. You can contact him at 620-227-3922 or via e-mail at pj_turner@sbcglobal.net.
The HCRN team found the families in Greensburg to be resolute as
they looked over the incredible damage.
