Before You Go to Greensburg, CALL
BY BARBARA J. ISENBERG
The Wichita Eagle
Before piling the family in the car and heading to Greensburg
this morning, the United Way wants you to call first and see
where and how you're needed.
In Kansas, call the United Way's hotline at 211 or 1-800-736-3383.
Outside of Kansas, call: 1-888-413-4327.
The hotline is staffed 24/7 with United Way workers who can
tell people wanting to help where they're best needed.
"If needed, they'll be asked to come out -- and if they're not,
they'll be told when they can come out," said Sharon Watson,
director of public affairs at the Kansas Adjutant General's
Department. "This is going to be a long-term effort and there
will be many needs now and in the future."
Much of the work this weekend will involve heavy machinery and
dangerous work, said Delane Butler, spokesman for the United
Way.
"It will be later on that we'll really need people to come out
and help do walk-throughs on people's properties," he said.
Once volunteers arrive in Greensburg, AmeriCorps will coordinate
their efforts, Butler said.
"I don't think they need a lot of individuals over the next
few days, so we're continuing to encourage people to not just
show up," he said. "If people are interested, they do need to
call ahead of time."
