John McGuire of Servants Unite, who we have worked with many times, is helping Crawford County (Ohio) Emergency Management to coordinate volunteers in Bucyrus, OH. He reports that they will probably be ready for volunteer help to come in from out of town within a week. It appears that the work will be similar to what we have done in Louisiana and Alabama. For more information, go to http://crawfordflood.org. You can also check John's blog at http://servantsunite.blogspot.com. Stand by if you are interested in helping out in this area. We will post more information as soon as arrangements for volunteers are finalized.
Bayou La Batre Recovery Project, in Alabama, is dedicated to helping the residents of this small fishing town recover. They are in need of volunteers to help with a range of jobs from debris removal to roofing, painting, sheet rock and flooring. Tools are desperately needed, so bring your own or feel free to donate some. Contact Daphne German at 251-609-0448 or email her at daphnegerman@hotmail.com for more information or to volunteer.
Summer work camp is set for June 16-July 31, 2007. We will be setting up a tent camp (similar to the one we had in Slidell, for you long time veterans) in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, a small and poor fishing town on the Gulf Coast. Working under the direction of the Bayou Recovery Project, we will primarily be doing rebuilding. This will include painting, drywall, installing flooring, roofing, a little bit of everything. Volunteers of all skill levels will be needed. Call Corky at 310-294-1609 to sign up. We will have a much smaller volunteer capacity than we did in Chalmette, so don't wait. Sign up now!
Plans are currently being made for mobile work camps, where Hilltop Rescue can go to a site with our own accommodations and supplies and offer short term (1-2 week) mission opportunities in areas of need. This will also provide practice for responding to the next disaster, wherever it may be.
Hilltop Rescue has given at least 23,000 days of volunteer labor to the people of Slidell, St. Bernard Parish and New Orleans. Well over a thousand homeowners were touched by strangers who came to help bear their burdens. But what was envisioned as a ministry to those stricken by natural disaster has become just as much a ministry to the 4,000 volunteers who were moved to help. We at Hilltop Rescue believe that a generation of American youth has been changed by bearing witness to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and that the fire for service to their fellow man will remain glowing long after the Gulf Coast has recovered.
