ICE President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo on Friday said she was closely monitoring the situation and the damage caused by Typhoon “Odette.”
In a statement on Friday, Robredo announced that they will be converting their campaign volunteer center in Quezon City into a relief hub for faster assistance to typhoon victims.
The Office of the Vice President has coordinated with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police and other government units that could help with the initiative.
As Typhoon Odette (international name “Rai) sweeps into the Visayas and Mindanao beginning Thursday evening, volunteers supporting the vice president and Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan banded together to help offer support to the victims.
Robredo is running for president in the 2022 elections and Pangilinan for vice president under the same ticket.
Team Robredo-Pangilinan (TRoPa) volunteers have opted for relief operations instead of a planned nationwide get-together and gift-giving called LENIwanag at KIKOtitap ang Pasko.
“I think it is no mere coincidence that led us to organize the LENIwanag at KIKOtitap ang Pasko activities this week. Through our organizational structure, we will support the massive relief operations led by Vice President Robredo on the ground. We are inspired because it’s the volunteers themselves who immediately saw the need to shift our event focus and allocate our resources to support her relief operations,” Team Leni Robredo communications head Benedict Bernabe said.
TRoPa volunteers had set up food stalls at evacuation areas in Bohol, Eastern Samar and Butuan City, Agusan del Sur, prior to Typhoon Odette’s landfall to give warm meals like arroz caldo and champorado to displaced families.
They are organizing an emergency fund donation campaign to assist affected families in critical need of help, according to Bernabe.
“Let us heed Leni Robredo’s call for radical love by helping everyone unconditionally, especially those who are most vulnerable and in need,” he said.
Bernabe added that donations of blankets, hygiene items, bottled water, masks, alcohol, rice and ready-to-eat food can be coursed through the LeniKiko2022 Volunteer Center at 248 Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City.
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker and Antique Rep. Loren Legarda on Thursday said people in the Visayas, Mindanao and parts of Southern Luzon should engage with disaster management and response authorities to organize evacuation, rescue, relief and recovery operations in impacted regions.
Based on the Disaster Preparedness and First Aid Handbook released by the Senate Committee on Climate Change in 2011, which she led during her time in the Senate, Legarda advised the public to stay calm and stay indoors during storms and typhoons and keep a flashlight and a radio with fresh batteries on hand.
Food, drinking water, batteries and first-aid supplies, she said, should all be available. Keep an eye on the news on TV and the radio. Maintain a clear route for emergency vehicles. Make sure your houses are safe. Turn off the primary sources of power, gas and water within your home in the event of floods. Stack furniture higher than the water level forecast. Floodwaters should not be allowed to reach appliances, valuables, chemicals, dangerous substances or waste. During a flood, do not use any electrical equipment.
Go to the specified evacuation center nearest you. Low-lying places, riverbanks, streams and coastal locations, as well as slopes, cliffs and hillsides, should be avoided because landslides, rockslides and mudslides can all be triggered by rain. Wading across flooded regions is not recommended. Attempting to cross a running creek is not a good idea.
Legarda is a United Nations Global Champion for Resilience and has been an advocate for disaster and climate resilience for over two decades.
