Establishing neighborhood community centers in the County of Los Angeles began in 1901 with the creation of Brownson House in East Los Angeles. There are numerous centers dispersed through the regions and located in areas of greatest need. Their location and contact information are listed below.
The centers provide case management and comprehensive social services as well as emergency assistance to the homeless and very low income individuals and families. The type of assistance depends on their needs and includes: food; clothing; temporary shelter; utilities assistance; transportation; public benefits assistance; job training; employment referrals; medical referrals; and special holiday activities. The goal is to empower people to become more self-sufficient and independent.

Program Description
The Thrift Stores managed by the Catholic Charities have the primary objective of providing immediate access to affordable and quality clothing and miscellaneous household goods to the community, especially to the homeless and low-income individuals and families. Clients of community centers receive these items for free. The stores are primarily staffed by volunteers and the items they offer are donations from individuals and businesses.
